Hair of the dog 2

On January first, 2013, we're having the second annual hair of the dog tournament at sand hill. I don't have all the details, but it's being run by Fly Ink.
There well be camping available (I will be camping tonight), and with the light rain we've had today we should be able to have a big fire. Come on out and celebrate the new year with the first tournament of the season!
Oh, and here's a pic from the Alamo bowl, which was awesome, by the way.

About our road

So we've tried to be clear with folks about the dirt road to Sand Hill being rough, but some have told us we've gone overboard and are scaring people away.  The thing is, we want to make sure people know what to expect.  In our directions we recommend people drive a high-clearance vehicle, but if you're careful you can get away with lesser clearance.  For example, a good friend of ours has been driving his Corolla out here for years, and this is what I've been driving out here ever since I sold my RAV4:

Of course you have to be careful driving something like this out here, and if you're coming from Austin or Lockhart, I recommend you take the 'long way' as it is better suited for low clearance vehicles than the 'short way.'  This 'long way' route involving Hwy 304 is also recommended for those coming from Houston, San Antonio, New Braunfels, San Marcos, etc, so you should be good to go approaching from those directions.

Also, be sure to read about how to drive in sand and other fun stuff at our driving directions page.

Fling away,
Daniel

Wild Turkey Fling mini at Sand Hill

Howdy,

We're planning a mini for 10am Saturday November 24th, which is the Saturday after Thanksgiving.  Nothing huge, just some friends and family and whoever else is in town and looking to throw down.

We're calling it the 'Wild Turkey Fling' because we thought it needed a name.  But please do not take this as an endorsement of a particular alcoholic beverage product, or of alcoholic beverages in general (we suggest you drink responsibly).  Also, if you happen to see the wild turkeys that sometimes frequent our course between holes 14 and 16, please do not attempt to fling them.

We plan to tee off at 10am Saturday for a one round mini.  There may also be a second round, but not part of the mini.  Folks are welcome to camp the night before and/or the night after, just let us know.  Also, give me a heads up if you're coming so we'll know to expect you.

Later,
Daniel

Rich cleans up

So we called the thing last weekend the first annual Whizzerville Classic, but really this is the third year in a row that we've had a mini-type thing in late January.  Before, it was mostly friends of Rich coming out to camp and play a few rounds to celebrate his birthday.  But we decided to formalize it and stake a claim to this part of the disc golf calendar - eight days before the superbowl and one week before the ice bowl.  So go ahead and add this date to your calendar for next year: Sat Jan 26th and Sun Jan 27th, 2013 for the second annual Whizzerville Classic.

Meantime, Rich cleaned up!  Won the mini with a course record 50 from the red tees.  I witnessed it, a nice round with a run of birdies through the middle and solid play throughout.  Then he proceeded to win the CTP!  I have video but it is pathetic so I'm not posting it.  I'm just sayin', if you need a 25 foot tape measure to figure out the winner then there's no point watching it again.

Anyway, it was a good weekend, and I was especially pleased that my brother Robbie and his father-in-law Bo were able to make it.  Hope to make it a family tradition going forward.

See you on the course!

First Annual Whizzerville Classic

Announcing the First Annual Whizzerville Classic, a one-day mini tournament to be held Saturday, January 28th, 2012 at sand hill

the idea is to have it be the weekend before the super bowl, when there's no decent football on the boob toob.  (sorry, not counting the pro bowl)

if you wish you may camp here Friday the night before or Saturday, or both
we will tee off at 11am on Sat.  Unless you have a personal helicopter it will not be easy to go anywhere for lunch, so please plan accordingly!

UPDATE: Fri 1/27 2:30pm  Drove out here this morning via the short way and the road was in good condition, given the 3.25" of rain we got.  Rain!  Woo Hoo!  Couple of puddles on the way in, no biggie

We are cleaning up the camping area and getting it ready for a fire.  Looks like a beautiful weekend for disc golf!  See y'all tomorrow!

PS- Looks like we will have some bbq chicken legs and beans

[EDIT: 1/18/12]
We decided it would be better to have it be a single round mini for this year, so we moved the start time back to 11am.  Open players will play the blue tees and Am players will use the red tees.

[EDIT: 1/12/12]
Details, details: $10 entry includes $7 payout at 100% and $3 for ace pot (CTP after round if no ace)

First Ace!

We finally had our first ace at Sand Hill!

I had been hoping to do the honor myself.  But Solo beat me to it.

Aced hole 18 to finish the round!  His daughter was a witness.  Also edged Blu, who merely birdied the hole, by one stroke.  Set a new course record for the red tees, at 52

Oh, but this is the best part.  He called it!  that's right, like frickin Babe Ruth he called it beforehand.  After he released it there was no doubt

Solid chains, thud in basket.  this is why we have chainstar baskets.  never know what might have happened with a cheap basket

Solo has been the best advocate for Sand Hill, so it's fitting that he should get the first ace.  nice shot, bro!

Hair of the Dog

We had a bunch of folks from Fly Ink out to play the course on new years day.  They held a mini tournament called hair of the dog because, well, I guess several of them had a drink or two the night before.  I didn't try one of the bloody marys but I understand they were tasty.

We had 21 open players who played from the blue tees and 10 ams who played from the just-finished red tees, plus four stragglers.  A new course record from the blue tees (55) was set by Bradley.  Also had a record from the red tees (56) but it won't hold up long.

Here are a handful of photos from the round:

It seems a good time was had all around.  I'm guessing we'll see these folks again, perhaps next new years day!
