Sand Hill Disc Golf is up for sale

I am sad to report that we are selling our disc golf course, including the cabin, barn, tractors, and all 52 acres of pristine central Texas property.  If you'd like to see the listing details click here.

It was a tough decision to sell, but the fact is my dad has not been able to keep up with maintenance ever since I moved to New Hampshire, and I haven't been able to help out as much as I'd like.

It was a dream of ours to build an awesome disc golf course of our very own, and many who played it will agree that we achieved it.  But the dream was not necessarily to own a disc golf course forever.  When we bought this place 14 years ago, there was a shortage of public disc golf courses in central Texas, but that is no longer true.

We are proud of what we achieved and we really hope that a fellow disc golfer buys the place so folks can continue to enjoy the challenges it presents.  In any case, we'll still see you from time to time on the local courses. -DS

King of the Sand Hill tournament, Memorial Day weekend, May 24-25th, 2014

Come on out for the first-ever PDGA-sanctioned tournament at Sand Hill!

It will be Memorial Day weekend, May 24-25, 2014, and is being run by Fly Ink, together with Twisted Flyer and Full Contact Disc Golf.

Read more about the event, including how to register, here, and if facebook is your thing, click here for more of whatever it is you all do on that site.

Please join us if you can, and take your shot at the course record!

In other news (since I haven't updated this thing in approximately forever):

Sand Hill now has a composting toilet near the practice basket and parking lot.  Also, we may have invented the first-ever mobile outhouse!  Here is a pic of it being moved into place by my dad (will post video later):

Sand Hill is now officially on the map!  Or more precisely, it's now in the PDGA course directory.  If you've played it before, and liked it, please go there and post a review.  If you didn't like it, let me know why.  We occasionally accept feedback on the course design, and in one case, we even slightly redesigned a hole (#8) in response to a suggestion by a touring pro.

See you on the course!

second annual Whizzerville Classic!

Coming up, Saturday, January 26th, 2013 at sand hill:
the Second Annual Whizzerville Classic, a one-day mini type thing.

The idea behind the Classic is to have it be the weekend before the super bowl, when there's no decent football on (not counting the pro bowl).

You're not going to believe what good shape our road is in, since a lot of work has been done over the last couple of weeks.

If you want to, you may camp here Friday the night before or Saturday, or both (just check with us to let us know you're coming).  Depending on who shows up (and how recently it rained) we might have another huge fire!

We will meet at 10am so we can tee off by 10:30am on Saturday.  We will likely also have an afternoon round, doubles or whatever, for those who stick around.

Hair of the dog 2

On January first, 2013, we're having the second annual hair of the dog tournament at sand hill. I don't have all the details, but it's being run by Fly Ink.
There well be camping available (I will be camping tonight), and with the light rain we've had today we should be able to have a big fire. Come on out and celebrate the new year with the first tournament of the season!
Oh, and here's a pic from the Alamo bowl, which was awesome, by the way.

About our road

So we've tried to be clear with folks about the dirt road to Sand Hill being rough, but some have told us we've gone overboard and are scaring people away.  The thing is, we want to make sure people know what to expect.  In our directions we recommend people drive a high-clearance vehicle, but if you're careful you can get away with lesser clearance.  For example, a good friend of ours has been driving his Corolla out here for years, and this is what I've been driving out here ever since I sold my RAV4:

Of course you have to be careful driving something like this out here, and if you're coming from Austin or Lockhart, I recommend you take the 'long way' as it is better suited for low clearance vehicles than the 'short way.'  This 'long way' route involving Hwy 304 is also recommended for those coming from Houston, San Antonio, New Braunfels, San Marcos, etc, so you should be good to go approaching from those directions.

Also, be sure to read about how to drive in sand and other fun stuff at our driving directions page.

Wild Turkey Fling mini at Sand Hill

We're planning a mini for 10am Saturday November 24th, which is the Saturday after Thanksgiving.  Nothing huge, just some friends and family and whoever else is in town and looking to throw down.

We're calling it the 'Wild Turkey Fling' because we thought it needed a name.  But please do not take this as an endorsement of a particular alcoholic beverage product, or of alcoholic beverages in general (we suggest you drink responsibly).  Also, if you happen to see the wild turkeys that sometimes frequent our course between holes 14 and 16, please do not attempt to fling them.

We plan to tee off at 10am Saturday for a one round mini.  There may also be a second round, but not part of the mini.  Folks are welcome to camp the night before and/or the night after, just let us know.  Also, give me a heads up if you're coming so we'll know to expect you.

Rich cleans up

So we called the thing last weekend the first annual Whizzerville Classic, but really this is the third year in a row that we've had a mini-type thing in late January.  Before, it was mostly friends of Rich coming out to camp and play a few rounds to celebrate his birthday.  But we decided to formalize it and stake a claim to this part of the disc golf calendar - eight days before the superbowl and one week before the ice bowl.  So go ahead and add this date to your calendar for next year: Sat Jan 26th and Sun Jan 27th, 2013 for the second annual Whizzerville Classic.

Meantime, Rich cleaned up!  Won the mini with a course record 50 from the red tees.  I witnessed it, a nice round with a run of birdies through the middle and solid play throughout.  Then he proceeded to win the CTP!  I have video but it is pathetic so I'm not posting it.  I'm just sayin', if you need a 25 foot tape measure to figure out the winner then there's no point watching it again.

Anyway, it was a good weekend, and I was especially pleased that my brother Robbie and his father-in-law Bo were able to make it.  Hope to make it a family tradition going forward.

See you on the course!
